Pet Food Bank
Because HSHA participates in the Hill’s/Science Diet Shelter Feeding Program, we frequently have an excess of donated food of other brands. This food is placed into our Pet Food Bank for needy pets in the community. Pet owners who are struggling to feed their pets may access the food bank, and food is also distributed through other local animal welfare organizations and food banks. Patrons of the pet food bank who need dog food are required to show proof of a valid dog license. Dog licenses are required by law and can be a life-saving tool for stray or lost dogs. Dog licenses can be purchased for a nominal fee at HSHA.
HSHA also partners with AniMeals, who distributes pet food to elderly pet owners participating in Meals on Wheels. For more information, contact HSHA at (717) 564-3320.

SafeHaven
In homes where there is violence, pets are often threatened or injured by the violent partner. The Humane Society of Harrisburg Area, Inc., in partnership with Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland & Perry Counties and the YWCA of Greater Harrisburg, has created the SafeHaven Program for pets in situations like these.
The SafeHaven program provides short-term emergency housing for dogs and cats owned by individuals or families in crisis within Central PA who are staying at a participating domestic violence shelter. The dogs and cats are cared for by foster families under the supervision of Humane Society of Harrisburg Area’s medical and animal care staff.
The SafeHaven program provides free of charge: up to 30 days of board; vaccinations; food and water; daily care and affection.
The SafeHaven program is available for those residing at the YWCA of Greater Harrisburg or Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland & Perry Counties.
