Volunteering

Volunteers are a vital part of the HSHA team. Without them, we would not be able to perform many of the essential functions at our shelters.  HSHA is always looking for eager volunteers to assist with the shelter animals and everyday responsibilities of shelter life. Whether you are interested in walking dogs, helping at events, or socializing cats, there is a place for you at HSHA. The animals are waiting for you...get started today!

Before Getting Started, Please Note
1. Volunteers must be 18 or older.
2. The volunteer program is not for court-mandated community service.  For this, please contact our front desk at 717-564-3320x0.
3. If you are volunteering through a special needs program or are the main contact for such a program, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at (717) 564-3320x113 PRIOR to applying.

How to Get Started

1. Submit a volunteer application (apply online here OR download an application here). The volunteer coordinator will then contact you with information about orientation.
2. Review the volunteer manual. Volunteers should be familiar with the policies and procedures detailed in the manual.
3. Attend orientation. Orientation provides volunteers with information on HSHA and on working with our resident animals. Orientations are scheduled on a monthly basis. For a schedule of upcoming orientations, please visit our online events calendar.

NOTE TO DOG WALKERS: Dog walking volunteers are required to purchase an approved leash (approximately $10) for use with HSHA dogs prior to the start of your volunteering.  This requirement is for the safety of both volunteers and dogs.
