Attention Supporters, HSHA has closed early this evening, November 15, due to the winter weather advisory. We plan to reopen tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. in accordance with our standard schedule. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we wait out the snow storm.
I'm so happy to be able to share our adoption story.
My fiance and I decided to look into pet adoption shortly after moving to the Central PA area in 2012. Only a few moments after beginning the walk through the cat area of the Humane Society, we spotted him: a wide-eyed gray and black tiger striped fellow named Roosevelt. When we peeked into the cage, he began pawing at the glass and rubbing against it. It was love at first sight! We brought him home in October 2012 and, after a few quiet adjustment days and a new name (Simon), his personality began to shine through. Our Simon is playful, affectionate, and social. He loves his toys, his favorite being a bright yellow ribbon that he carries around in his mouth as he trots around the house. He's quite the lap cat, too. It's rare for my fiance or myself to be sitting on the couch or lying in bed for more than 5 or 10 minutes without being joined by our little cuddle buddy. And the purring! He sounds like a motorboat as soon as we walk in the door after work, and he loves to meow and chirp at us in between purrs. Though Simon is 6 years old, he's got more energy than any kitten I've ever known. He's actually running laps around the couch as I write this. He's a smart guy, too: he sits and speaks for treats, and he also comes to his name!
We can't possibly thank the staff and volunteers of the Humane Society of Harrisburg for taking such good care of our little guy until we had the chance to bring him home. I also couldn't recommend adopting an older animal more. Simon may not be a tiny fluffy kitten, but he has so much life and love to share. He is an absolute joy, and we can't imagine life without him!

Currently our greatest need is canned food for both dogs and cats! Our cats prefer pate but the pups aren't picky! In addition, we could use some Clorox Wipes to help maintain a safe, clean, and healthy environment for all the sheter's residents.
Check out HSHA's Amazon Wish List for more specific needs.
We have several dogs and cats that are looking for a foster home. If you think you may be able to help, please visit our Fosters Needed page.
