FOSTER CARE KITS

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Most veterinary hospitals and animal welfare organizations have had to stop performing elective surgeries, including spay and neuter, in order to preserve PPE and adhere to social distancing guidelines and state-issued stay at home orders. This means that thousands of stray and feral cats normally altered during this time of year will remain intact through the height of breeding season. Because of this we expect to see an increase in the numbers of kittens that come through our doors this spring. We have already begun to grow our pool of foster homes in anticipation of this surge. Help us make sure we have enough supplies needed to care for these kittens once they go into foster care by donating to our Kitten Foster Care Kits.  Our Most Needed Items have been marked as “Priority” on our Amazon Foster Care Kits Wish List:

HSHA is developing Foster Care Kits to provide to each active foster family to enable quicker response to medical situations, to limit the trips to the shelter for supplies, and to improve the overall experience for the foster parent and foster animals.  Different types of kits are being assembled for each species/different type of foster:

  • Underage Kittens. Most common foster situation
  • Underage Puppies
  • Adult Dogs: Behavior Fosters. Dogs that are timid/unsocialized, anxious, depressed, otherwise not doing well in the shelter setting or need additional behavior modification or training outside of what can be provided at the shelter
  • Adult Dogs: Medical Fosters. Dogs recovering from illness or surgery
  • Adult Cats: Behavior Foster. Cats that are very shut down and frightened in the shelter setting (also includes feral kittens in need of human socialization)
  • Adult Cats: Medical Foster. Cats recovering from illness or surgery

The appropriate Foster Care Kit will be sent home with the foster family.   Foster families simply reach out to HSHA when they are low on supplies to have their Kit replenished!

To help in assembling Foster Care Kits, the following items are needed.  These items can be donated by dropping off at HSHA at 7790 Grayson Road, Harrisburg or by ordering online and shipping directly to HSHA.
