Volunteer
Volunteers are a vital part of the HSHA team. Without them, we would not be able to perform many of the essential functions at our shelters. HSHA is always looking for eager volunteers to assist with the shelter animals and everyday responsibilities of shelter life. Whether you are interested in walking dogs, helping at events, or socializing cats, there is a place for you at HSHA. The animals are waiting for you...get started today!
How to Get Started
1. Submit a volunteer application (apply online here OR download an application here). The volunteer coordinator will then contact you with information about orientation. Potential volunteers, please note:
-Completed applications are kept on file for 3 months and will be discarded if you do not complete the required volunteer orientation within that time.
-All volunteers must be 18 or older.
-The volunteer program is not intended for court-mandated community service.
-If you are volunteering through a special needs program, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at (717) 564-3320x113 prior to applying.
2. Review the volunteer manual. Volunteers should be familiar with the policies and procedures detailed in the manual.
3. Attend orientation. Orientation provides volunteers with information on HSHA and on working with our resident animals. Orientations are scheduled on a monthly basis. For a schedule of upcoming orientations, please visit our online events calendar.

HSHA Auxiliary
Established in 1980, the auxiliary is a group of individuals whose purpose is to raise money to benefit the Humane Society of the Harrisburg Area and have fun in the process. The auxiliary’s fundraising efforts currently include; two huge yard sales per year, amateur bartender night with games of chance, participation in the Colonial Park Mall’s Magical Night of Giving in the month of November, and sales of Giant gift cards. There is a modest $10 annual membership fee which is also used for benefit of the Shelter. Auxiliary meetings are held at 6:30 pm in the meeting rooms of the Swatara Township Municipal Bldg, 559 Eisenhower Blvd.; the second Tuesday of January, March, May, July and September and the third Tuesday of November. The July meeting is a covered dish indoor picnic beginning at 6pm. For more information or how to join, please contact either Loraine Spangler at 564-6469 or Cheryl Campbell at 545-1411.
